Energy follows when you move

Move to create energy, quote from Making Good Habits, Breaking Bad Habits

Making Good Habits, Breaking Bad Habits makes a point that sounds backwards at first. No energy flows until we actually get moving. Most of us wait to feel motivated before we act. However, motivation often appears only after we start. Action creates energy, not the other way around.

Think about exercise. On many days, the hardest part is putting on shoes and stepping outside. Ten minutes later, the body warms up and the mood improves. Work behaves in the same way. Opening a document feels heavy, yet after a few lines, ideas begin to flow. The first step is the expensive one.

Small ways to move before you feel ready

Behaviour scientists have practical names for this. Some call it the five-minute rule: commit to only five minutes of a task. Others talk about behavioural activation, a method used in therapy, where small actions come before mood changes. Both rely on the same principle. Start small and let momentum do the rest.

Physical movement also helps the mind directly. A short walk can improve creativity, as a Stanford study by Marily Oppezzo and Daniel Schwartz showed. Therefore, when you feel stuck, stand up and walk around the block. For example, many people solve problems on a walk that they could not crack at a desk.

Finally, make it easy to begin. Prepare tools the night before, break tasks into tiny steps and remove distractions. The less friction stands between you and the first action, the more often you will move. Once you do, energy has a path to follow, and the day often takes care of itself.

In other words, do not wait for the perfect mood. Instead, take one small action now, because the feeling you are waiting for usually arrives a few minutes after you start.
