How strong feelings capture attention

Strong feelings and fixation, quote from Focus by Daniel Goleman

Daniel Goleman notes that the stronger the emotion, the greater our fixation. Strong feelings act like magnets for attention. Anger, fear and even excitement pull the mind towards one object and hold it there. Everything else fades into the background, sometimes including common sense.

This has an evolutionary logic. Early humans needed to focus completely on threats. A rustle in the grass deserved full attention, just in case. However, modern triggers are different. An unfriendly email or a tense meeting can produce a similar reaction. Goleman popularised the term amygdala hijack to describe this takeover.

Managing strong feelings without suppressing them

The goal is not to stop feeling. Emotions carry useful information about what matters to us. Instead, the aim is to create a small gap between feeling and action. One simple method is naming the emotion. Research by Matthew Lieberman suggests that labelling a feeling, such as saying I feel angry, reduces its intensity.

Breathing also helps. A few slow breaths signal safety to the nervous system and loosen the fixation. For example, waiting ten minutes before replying to a provocative message often changes the tone of the answer completely. Moreover, that pause protects relationships that a quick reaction might damage.

Finally, notice your patterns. Which situations reliably produce strong feelings for you? Deadlines, criticism or uncertainty are common triggers. Knowing them lets you prepare. You cannot always avoid intense emotions, but you can decide how long they get to steer your attention.

Also, remember that positive emotions fixate attention too. Excitement about a new idea can blind us to its risks. So, before a big decision taken on a high, sleep on it for one night, and then check whether the plan still looks as good in the calm light of morning.
