Never quit, but choose what to persist in

Never quit, quote from Making Good Habits, Breaking Bad Habits

Never quit. It is one of the shortest pieces of advice in Making Good Habits, Breaking Bad Habits, and one of the most repeated in motivational culture. Persistence matters, of course. Most worthwhile goals take longer than expected. Many people give up just before progress becomes visible.

Psychologist Angela Duckworth calls this quality grit, a mix of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Her research suggests that grit predicts success in demanding environments, from military academies to spelling competitions. In other words, talent helps, but staying power often decides the outcome.

When never quit needs a second look

However, never quit needs nuance. Persisting in the wrong direction can waste years. Economists talk about the sunk cost fallacy, where we continue because of what we already invested, not because of what lies ahead. Therefore, it helps to separate the goal from the method. Keep the goal, but change tactics when evidence says they are failing.

A useful practice is a regular review. Every few months, ask two questions. Is this still a goal I care about? Is my current approach working? If the first answer is yes and the second is no, adjust the method. For example, a writer who never finishes a novel might switch to short stories first, without abandoning the dream.

So read the advice wisely. Never quit on what truly matters to you. At the same time, give yourself permission to stop activities that no longer serve that purpose. Real persistence is flexible. It bends, learns and keeps moving towards the things that deserve your effort.

In addition, celebrate persistence itself. Showing up on difficult days is an achievement, even when results are small. Consequently, recognising that effort keeps you going through the long middle part of any worthwhile project.
