Things as they are in each moment, Shunryu Suzuki quote

Shunryu Suzuki writes a simple phrase in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: things as they are in each moment. Reality is not fixed. It changes constantly, moment by moment. A river is never the same twice, as Heraclitus noted. Likewise, people, relationships and situations evolve continuously.

We often relate to the world through old snapshots. We see a colleague as they were years ago, or a city as it looked on our first visit. As a result, we miss how things have changed. Fresh attention lets us meet the present as it actually is.

Meeting each moment with fresh eyes

One practice is to drop assumptions deliberately. Before a meeting with someone familiar, remind yourself that they may have changed. Therefore, you listen with more openness. For example, a teenager may surprise parents who still see them as a child.

Impermanence also brings comfort. Difficult moments pass, just like pleasant ones. Moreover, knowing that everything changes encourages us to appreciate good moments while they last.

Mindfulness training supports this skill. Paying attention to breath, sensations and sounds shows how experience shifts constantly. Consequently, we become more flexible and less attached to rigid views.

Business benefits too. Markets and customers change quickly, and companies that observe freshly adapt better.

In short, every moment is new. Therefore, practise noticing what is different today. For instance, look at a familiar room and find one detail you never saw before. As a result, attention sharpens, and life feels more alive.

Moreover, this attitude makes relationships healthier. When we allow people to change, we stop trapping them in old roles, and they feel free to grow alongside us.
