A leader with no mind of his own, Lao Tzu quote

The Tao Te Ching describes an ideal leader. The Master has no mind of his own. He works with the mind of the people. Lao Tzu does not mean the leader lacks opinions. Instead, the leader sets aside ego and personal agenda, tuning in to the needs and wisdom of the community.

This idea contrasts with the image of heroic leaders who impose their vision. History shows that such leaders can achieve much, but they can also cause harm when they stop listening. Lao Tzu suggests a quieter, more responsive approach rooted in humility.

Leading without a mind of his own

Listening deeply is the starting point. Leaders who understand people’s concerns make decisions that people support. Therefore, surveys, conversations and open forums are not formalities but essential tools. For example, city planners who consult residents often design spaces people actually use.

Setting aside ego also improves decisions. Leaders attached to their own ideas may ignore evidence. Moreover, openness allows better ideas to emerge from any part of the organisation.

Responsiveness builds trust. Consequently, people feel ownership when their views shape outcomes, and they work harder to make decisions succeed.

This approach still requires judgement. Leaders weigh different views, make choices and take responsibility.

Lao Tzu adds that the best leaders are barely noticed. When work is done, people say they did it themselves.

Parents and teachers can apply this too. Guiding children by understanding their interests often works better than imposing plans.

In short, humble leadership starts with listening. Therefore, before your next decision, gather perspectives from those affected. For instance, ask three team members what they think. As a result, the decision will reflect the wisdom of the group.
