Owness: owning everything we are

Owness, when we own everything we are

When we own everything we are. The sentence describes a powerful state of mind, which we might call owness. It means accepting responsibility for our choices, strengths, flaws and results. Not blaming circumstances or other people, but saying clearly: this is mine.

Psychologists use the term locus of control. People with an internal locus believe their actions shape outcomes. Those with an external locus believe luck or others decide. Research links an internal locus with better health, motivation and achievement, although reality always includes factors beyond our control.

Practising owness every day

Owness starts with language. Notice phrases like they made me or I had no choice. Then try alternatives, such as I chose this or I can respond differently. For example, saying I missed the deadline instead of the deadline was unrealistic opens the door to learning.

It also means owning strengths. Many people find it easier to accept blame than praise. Yet acknowledging your talents is part of seeing yourself accurately. Therefore, accept compliments with a simple thank you.

Teams benefit greatly from this mindset. When everyone owns their part, problems get solved faster. Moreover, a culture of ownership reduces finger-pointing and builds trust.

In the end, owning everything we are brings freedom. When we stop waiting for others to change, we regain power over our own path. That responsibility can feel heavy at first. Over time, it feels like strength.

In addition, ownership includes asking for help. Taking responsibility does not mean doing everything alone. On the contrary, recognising when you need support is part of owning the outcome. Therefore, a person with strong ownership asks questions early, shares problems openly and coordinates with others to reach the goal.
