Long and short define each other

Long and short define each other, Lao Tzu quote

The Tao Te Ching observes that long and short define each other. Nothing is long on its own. A line is long only compared with a shorter one. The same is true for many qualities: high and low, easy and difficult, rich and poor. Opposites depend on each other for meaning.

This insight changes how we judge situations. A salary feels high or low depending on comparison. A task feels hard or easy depending on experience. As a result, our sense of value is often relative, shaped by reference points we may not even notice.

What long and short teach about perspective

Behavioural economists study this as anchoring. The first number we see influences how we judge later numbers. For example, a product priced at 200 euros feels cheap next to one priced at 500 euros. Therefore, awareness of reference points helps us make better decisions.

Comparison also affects happiness. Measuring ourselves against people who have more can leave us dissatisfied. On the other hand, comparing with our past selves or with people who have less can increase gratitude.

Lao Tzu’s point goes deeper than psychology. Opposites are not enemies. Moreover, they complete each other. Without darkness, light would have no meaning, and without difficulty, ease would not feel sweet.

This view encourages balance. Instead of fearing one side, we accept both as part of a whole.

Time works this way too. A long day feels short when we enjoy it, and a short wait feels endless when we are anxious.

Teams can apply this insight when setting goals. Choosing realistic benchmarks shapes how people perceive progress.

In short, context shapes meaning. Therefore, when judging something, ask what you are comparing it with. For instance, review your progress against last year rather than against others. As a result, perspective becomes clearer and kinder.
