The victory of today over yesterday

Victory of today over yourself of yesterday, Musashi quote

Miyamoto Musashi described progress in two steps. Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men. The order matters. First you compete with your past self. Only later, and almost as a side effect, do you surpass others.

This idea removes much of the pressure of comparison. Measuring yourself against the best performers can be discouraging. Measuring against who you were yesterday, on the other hand, is fair and achievable. A slightly better page, workout or conversation counts as a win.

Building the victory of today

Small improvements compound. James Clear popularised the idea that getting one per cent better each day leads to remarkable change over a year. The maths is simple, yet the practice is demanding. It requires showing up consistently, even on days when progress feels invisible.

Reflection supports this process. At the end of each day, ask what you did better than yesterday. Write one line. For example, you might note that you listened more patiently in a meeting or finished a task without distraction. Over weeks, those notes reveal real growth.

Musashi trained this way for his entire life. He practised daily, studied many arts and kept refining his technique. Therefore, his mastery was not a single breakthrough but thousands of quiet victories.

So focus on today’s small win. Beat yesterday’s version of yourself in one specific way. Tomorrow will take care of itself, and the larger victories usually follow.

Moreover, small wins build confidence. Therefore, focus on what you can finish today. For example, completing one key task before noon changes the whole day.

Moreover, setbacks fit into this model. Some days you will not beat yesterday. That is normal, because progress is never perfectly linear. Therefore, look at weekly or monthly trends rather than single days. As a result, you stay motivated even when one particular day feels disappointing, and you keep moving forward.
