Discovering the freedom of existence

The freedom of existence, Shunryu Suzuki quote

Shunryu Suzuki speaks of the freedom of existence in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. This freedom is not about having unlimited choices or wealth. Instead, it refers to an inner state where we are not bound by attachments, fears or rigid ideas. We simply exist, fully and openly, in each moment.

Modern life often equates freedom with options. More products, more careers, more destinations. However, research on the paradox of choice suggests that too many options can increase anxiety. Suzuki points to a different freedom, one that does not depend on circumstances.

Practising the freedom of existence

Letting go of attachments is central. Attachment to outcomes, possessions or status creates constant tension. Therefore, holding things more lightly brings relief. For example, enjoying a beautiful object without needing to own it can feel surprisingly liberating.

Accepting impermanence helps too. When we accept that everything changes, we stop clinging so tightly. Moreover, this acceptance allows us to appreciate experiences while they last.

Simplicity supports inner freedom. Fewer commitments and possessions leave more room for presence. Consequently, many people who simplify their lives report greater calm and satisfaction.

Freedom of existence also includes accepting ourselves. When we stop fighting who we are, energy becomes available for living.

This freedom is available in ordinary situations, not only on retreats. A quiet walk or a shared meal can reveal it.

In short, real freedom lives inside. Therefore, notice one attachment that causes stress and loosen it a little. For instance, check your phone less often for approval. As a result, you may feel lighter and more at ease with simply being.

Moreover, inner freedom makes us kinder. When we do not cling so tightly, we can give time, attention and help more generously.
