Clearing the mind of what is related to something else

Clearing the mind of what is related to something else, Shunryu Suzuki

Shunryu Suzuki describes a practice in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: to clear our mind of what is related to something else. Much of our mental activity concerns other places, other times and other tasks. While eating, we think about work. While working, we think about the weekend. As a result, the present activity receives only partial attention.

Suzuki’s suggestion is to let each moment be complete in itself. When we drink tea, we drink tea. When we listen, we listen. This does not mean forgetting responsibilities. Instead, it means giving each activity its own time and space, without constant mental detours.

Letting go of what is related to something else

A practical step is noticing mental side trips. Each time attention jumps elsewhere, acknowledge it and return. Therefore, the mind gradually learns to settle. For example, during a meeting, you might notice thoughts about emails and gently bring focus back to the speaker.

Writing helps clear mental clutter. Keeping a notebook for stray thoughts lets you capture them without following them immediately. Moreover, the brain relaxes when it trusts that ideas will not be lost.

Environment matters as well. Fewer open tabs, fewer notifications and a tidy desk reduce triggers that pull attention away. Consequently, focusing becomes easier with less effort.

Research on multitasking shows that switching between tasks reduces efficiency and increases errors. Single-tasking, by contrast, improves quality and satisfaction.

Rest benefits too. A walk without phone or podcast lets the mind breathe and recover.

In short, focus means saying no to mental detours. Therefore, choose one activity today and protect it from interruptions. For instance, eat lunch without screens. As a result, you will notice flavours, thoughts and feelings you usually miss.
