Why a lack of trust feels so lonely

Trust and distrust, George Eliot quote from Middlemarch

George Eliot wrote in Middlemarch that no loneliness is lonelier than distrust. The sentence is striking. We usually think of loneliness as being physically alone. Eliot points to something deeper. You can sit in a crowded room and still feel isolated if you cannot rely on anyone there.

Distrust cuts connection at its root. When we doubt others, we hide our real thoughts. We double-check, protect ourselves and avoid vulnerability. Over time, that defensive posture becomes exhausting. As a result, relationships turn into negotiations rather than sources of support.

Building trust step by step

Trust usually grows through small, repeated actions. Keeping promises, admitting mistakes and sharing information openly all add to it. Researchers often describe trust as a bank account. Each reliable action makes a deposit, while each betrayal makes a large withdrawal.

Teams show this clearly. Google’s Project Aristotle found that psychological safety was the most important factor in effective teams. In other words, people perform best when they feel safe to speak up without fear of punishment. Therefore, leaders who model honesty create stronger groups.

It also helps to extend some trust first. Waiting for others to prove themselves can lock everyone in caution. For example, giving a new colleague a meaningful task early signals confidence, and people often rise to meet that expectation.

Of course, trust should be wise, not blind. Still, Eliot’s warning remains. A life built on suspicion is a lonely one. Choosing to trust carefully, and to be trustworthy, opens the door to real connection.

In addition, trust needs repair skills. Every relationship faces moments of disappointment. What matters, therefore, is how people respond. A sincere apology, a clear explanation and a changed behaviour can rebuild what was damaged. As a result, relationships that survive a breach of trust sometimes become even stronger than before.
