Trials and revelations on the hero's journey

Trials and revelations, Joseph Campbell on the hero's journey

In Joseph Campbell’s map of the hero’s journey, two words travel together: trials and revelations. The hero leaves home and meets tests along the road. Each test hurts. Yet each one also reveals something, about the world or about the hero. Without trials, there is no transformation. Without revelations, the trials are only suffering.

This pattern is familiar in real life. A failed project teaches more than a smooth one. A difficult boss shows us our limits and, sometimes, our strengths. Even illness or loss can bring unexpected clarity about what truly matters. They are not pleasant, of course. Still, they are often where growth begins.

Learning from trials instead of only surviving them

The difference between surviving and learning lies in reflection. After a hard period, take time to ask what it revealed. What did I discover about my values? Which skills did I build? Who showed up for me? Writing the answers down turns a painful chapter into usable wisdom.

It also helps to remember that tests come in sequence. The hero rarely faces one big test and then rests forever. Instead, challenges grow with ability. That can feel tiring. However, it also means that today’s struggle is preparation for tomorrow’s bigger stage. For example, managing one small team prepares you to lead a larger one.

Campbell’s insight is comforting in a strange way. If you are facing trials right now, you are not off the path. You are on it. The revelation may not be visible yet, but it is usually on its way. Keep walking, stay curious and let the journey teach you.

In the end, every chapter of struggle adds a line to a story that is worth telling.
